Le 16 juin, suite aux délibérations qui se sont tenues à la Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson à Paris, le jury du Prix HCB 2009 a désigné le photographe sud-africain David Goldblatt pour son projet, « TJ », travail en cours sur la ville de Johannesburg. Sa candidature était présentée par Janette Danel-Heleu.
Décerné tous les deux ans par la Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, le Prix HCB est un prix d’aide à la création, d’un montant indivisible de 30 000 euros, dont l’objectif est de permettre à un photographe de réaliser un projet qu’il ne pourrait mener à bien sans cette aide. Né en 1930 à Randfontein dans le Transvaal en Afrique du Sud, David Goldblatt s'intéresse très jeune à la photographie. Il débute en tant que photographe de presse en 1948, et, très vite, s'attachera à immortaliser la société sud-africaine. Le quotidien en Afrique du Sud sera, pour lui, un terrain privilégié, et ses images ont une importante portée documentaire dans le paysage social et politique du pays, pendant l'Apartheid, mais aussi depuis la fin du régime ségrégationniste.
