Aurel Bauh ( sometime spelled out as BAUCH ) was born in Craiova ( Romania ), in 1900.
Talented, art inclined the young Bauh went to Paris and studied with Fernand Leger, who introduced him to Archipenko - with whom he will further his studies, in Berlin, in the early 20's.
Stimulated by the fermenting art scene, both in Paris and Berlin, at that time, and under the influence of a circle of friends, he developed a keen interest in photography, in its multiple aspects and intriguing possibilities. He become present and visible in various manifestations and exhibits.
By the beginning of the 30's, at the family's insistence and responding to attractive prospects, he returned to Romania and open, in Bucharest his
" 43 " photo studio, dedicated to portrait work and book illustration.
Caught by the WWII in a Nazi allied country and then immobilized and frustrated by the iron corset of the Communist regime which followed the end of the War, he was protected from the harsh environment by his exceptional talent, as an artist,, his wits and the support of friends and former "subjects".
Finally, in 1961, he succeeded in returning to Paris and start anew in advertising and glamour photography, mostly as a free lance. His efforts were cut short, by an accidental death, in the spring of 1964, from a surgery mishap
His work was dispersed, and partially lost, between New York, Paris, Bruxelles, Tel-Aviv and Bucharest and what survived was saved in private collection, the majority in Germany. This is why his pictures are seldom seen and his fresh, subtle, incisive and technically accomplished work remains largely unknown. The most recent and impressive resurgence was in the context of an avant-garde art exhibition, last year in Rotterdam. [ Romanian Surrealism : 1928-1947 ]
